1 Nephi 5:22

--Wherefore, it was wisdom in the Lord that we should carry them with us, as we journeyed in the wilderness towards the land of promise. --

This scripture has always meant a lot to me. In this earthly life we all are commanded to journey through a vast desert landscape we call the human experience. A desert is an appropriate analogy to life as they contain many characteristics similar to our earthly existence. First, deserts reflect a harsh environment which contains more death than life. In our earthly existence, powerful forces from all angles accommodate those things which promote death, namely spiritual death. Deserts oftentimes are featureless. In our world, navigation is completed with a map and a compass. Navigation, however, is based on direction by prominent features. In major deserts, strong, identifiable features are almost non-existent. It's quite easy to lose yourself in a kaleidoscope of endless sand. This life is quite similar. With few prominent landmarks, and with many false guides beckoning our attention, it's quite simple to get lost. Finally, deserts are lonely places. The history of civilization has always centered around water. Abundant water resources attract large populations. The opposite is also true. Deserts do not extend their arms of invitation towards the human race. In this life, the world can be a lonely place, offering few resources for life, prosperity, and joy.

Yes, I do believe that it is wisdom that we have the scriptures throughout this difficult sojourn on earth!

Nice. You should move far, far away from your family. Then you'll think lonely. It's a good thing we get phone calls once in a while.
